The power of words and pictures

Updated: Mar 23, 2023

Your mind is designed to work with mental images all the time. Think back how you learnt how to speak the language you you're surrounding. You constantly connected pictures with the words you were told and because this process was repeated over and over your increased your vocabulary constantly. For every word there is a matching picture and abstract concepts such as love, respect, recognition we have to experience in action, that is to see them, in order to recognize is't meaning. Experiences leave scenes or pictures in the mind. Every memory is stored in your brain as a picture.

Your mind works only with two elements, pictures and words. The words you speak create pictures in your mind. Above all we are talking about the words your say to your self, that is your repetitive thoughs,t which eventually become your beliefs about yourself and the world your live in.. Your inner dialogue determines how you feel about anything and how you will show up in the world. Your own words that form the thoughts in your head are therefore the most important words of all.

Each word creates an image in your mind, and causes both a physical reaction and an emotional response. If I ask you now to close your eyes and think of a lemon and imagine how you bite into it, then your mouth will start to produce saliva (physical reaction) and your feeling is either a good one or a bad one (emotional response), depending on what you associate with the taste of a lemon. You see how easy that is.

Pictures are the first thing babies learn to read. They watch their parents closely and learn to read their emotional world through these "pictures" in the form of facial expressions, gestures, looks. The most developed sense in the womb is the hearing. Embryos associate feelings to the sounds they hear. During the first 4 - 6 months research shows that babies go through an attachment period and they basically read the emotional state of their caregivers by staring into their eyes. So we see clearly that pictures and words play an essential part our lives.

Pictures also help us to make connections and to remember things more easily. Words wrapped in a story help us to better remember facts, because words create images with which we can connect the content. With every picture and word we also associate a feeling. Just think of a butterfly on your hand and then a cockroach in your hand. A very different word, image and feeling isn't it?

Thoughts are ultimately words. Words evoke appropriate images. Then the feeling follows! By the way, this is also how advertising and marketing works. Here, our brain/emotional processes are often deliberately manipulated.

When we understand the power of words and images, we can see how important it is that we learn to communicate well with our mind, to give it powerful positive images to focus on because imagine what negative words will do with you. Imagine what different pictures and emotional responses an expression you have when you say things like, "You are useless" or "You are confident". "This job is killing me" versus " I am grateful for my job"

Your mind doesn't care if what you tell it is good or bad, it just lets it in -

like lotion on dry skin!
